The general rule is that the police cannot search without a warrant. There are many exceptions to this rule.
If a peace officer reasonably believes a person is armed with a dangerous weapon and is a threat to the safety of the peace officer or another person, the peace officer may search the person to the extent reasonably necessary to find a weapon. The officer can take a weapon or any evidence of a crime.
The police can search a person they have arrested.
